Pirkei Avot (5:21) sets out a schedule for a Jewish education: five years old for Scripture, ten for Mishnah, thirteen for mitzvot, fifteen for Talmud. Your students are exactly the age the tradition gave to Mishnah. The ten-year-olds are starting it on time, and the older boys are in the last stretch before Gemara.
